Marguerite Lucy Butler was born in January 1879 in Hastings, England. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree and then trained as a teacher at Cambridge. After further training at the Women’s Missionary College in Edinburgh she was appointed by the London Missionary Society to Bangalore, India where as Principal she developed the Girls' High School and 'made it renowned throughout Mysore State and beyond', N.
